Brose (Japanese: プロセダン, "Procedan") is an instant defeat technique common to Phantasy Star games.

Etymology[]

プロセダン (purosedan) may possibly either refer to the Spanish word Procedan (a conjugation of Proceder, meaning "to proceed"), or be a combination of the English word "process" and the Japanese word dan (断), meaning "to cut off, to sever."

In the latter case, プロセダン would likely mean something like "process disruption," which would be fitting considering the way the technique works by disrupting the systems and life processes of mechanical beings (in PS II and IV) and biological enemies (in PS IV).[1]

Phantasy Star series[]

Phantasy Star II[]

In Phantasy Star II, brose costs 8 TP to cast. It defeats one robot instantly, with a 50% chance to hit.

Kain is the only player character who can use brose. He learns brose at level 26.

Phantasy Star IV[]

In Phantasy Star IV: The End of the Millennium, brose costs 16 TP to cast. It defeats all affected enemies instantly. Each enemy's strength stat and break sensitivity affect brose's success rate. Enemies resistant to break effects, particularly non-machine enemies other than zombies and tall robed minions, are difficult to affect with brose. Enemies immune to break effects, including ghosts, dimensional demons, and most bosses, are immune to brose.

Chaz and Gryz are the only player characters who can use brose. Grys already knows brose when he joins the party. Chaz learns brose at level 21.

In PS2, its effect targets a single enemy, whereas in PS4 it targets all enemies. In PS2, it was a technique designed to directly destroy the computers of mechanical enemies, so it only affected them. However, in PS4, it evolved into a technique that destroys and disintegrates the molecular bonds of objects, making it also occasionally effective against biological enemies, albeit with a low probability."
