Deband or Deban (Japanese: デバンド, possibly from German die Wand ("the wall") or D-Wand/DeWand (lit. "D-Wall")) is a support technique common to Phantasy Star games.

Etymology[]

デバンド (de-ba-n-do) is possibly from German die Wand or "the wall." However, considering the katakana used, it may be more likely it was intended to be D-Wand or DeWand, the De/D (D being pronounced like "day" in German) being short for defensive, a.k.a. the German word defensiv + -e ending to pair with the feminine noun Wand, or "wall." The spell is traditionally a defense buff, therefore it would act as a character's protective "wall" while they have the effect.

Phantasy Star II[]

In Phantasy Star II, deban costs 4 TP to cast. It creates a shield over the entire party, reducing the enemy's tech damage.

Amy is the only character that is able to learn the technique at level 4, however, anyone can cast deban if they have a snow crown in their inventory.

Phantasy Star III[]

In Phantasy Star III: Generations of Doom, deban costs 1 TP to cast. It will stop an enemy from being able to physically attack, however, this technique will not work on bosses.

Wren, Ayn, Ryan, Crys, and Sean are the only characters in the game that are able to learn this technique across all generations.

Phantasy Star IV[]

In Phantasy Star IV: The End of the Millennium, deban costs 6 TP to cast and is learned by Rika at level 14. It increases the entire party's defense.

There are three other skills that are similar to deban in the game: Warla is a skill learned by Kyra at level 29, and Blessing is a skill that Raja knows upon joining the party. They both increase the party's defense. Barrier is a skill that Demi and Wren already know upon joining the party. It increases the party's magic defense.

Deband is available to all Forces, RAmars, RAmarls, and HUnewearls. When cast it grants the caster with the Deband effect, which provides a bonus to DFP. The bonus is dependent on the base DFP level (as Deband boosts according to a set percent per technique level, rather than a set amount) and the technique level. Starting at level 3, Deband will also provide the boost to anyone within its attack range; this range increases with technique level.

Deband will wear off eventually and require re-casting. As technique level increases, the amount of time the effect lasts increases.

Deband, like Resta, is a very useful technique for all classes because DFP is a vital stat to every character.

Deband is the direct opposite of Zalure. A higher-level Deband will override a lower-level Zalure, whereas a lower-level Deband will be canceled out in the face of a higher-leveled Zalure.

One of the special effects available to Mags is the ability to cast Shifta and Deband on their owners.
