Hugh Thompson (Japanese: ヒューイ・リーン, "Huey Reane") is one of the playable characters in Phantasy Star 2. He joins the party as its fifth member after the investigation of the Biosystems Lab.

Characteristics[]

Appearance[]

Hugh is a young man with purple hair and green eyes. He wears a sleeveless green suit with a red shirt underneath, a red belt, and black wristbands.

Personality[]

Hugh is kind-hearted, level-headed, intelligent, reasonable, practical, and sometimes driven. He is rather a pacifist who values life and prefers peace instead of fighting, but when push comes to shove, he will fight to protect those who are defenseless, including the less-harmful biomonsters. Years of studying has not only given Hugh an excellent intellect, but also makes him a reliable team member to Rolf when it comes to dealing with biomonsters and the aspects of life. However, Hugh eventually learns that nothing lasts forever and that everything has an end at a certain point. Nevertheless, Hugh treasures all that has value and life.

Story[]

Phantasy Star II[]

Since his days as a youth, Hugh has been highly intrigued by plant and animal life, especially biomonsters. During his early days, he was a Motavia University student and employee, where he continuously studied those related subjects, as well as their medical aspects. After graduating from the university, Hugh became a leading biologist, specializing on plants and biomonsters.

After hearing about Rolf's mission regarding the massive biomonster outbreak, he joined him and his friends in his quest, and served as the biological expert of the team. During the adventure, Hugh eventually learns that all things must pass away and that they each have an end, as seen at the end of the game where he told the earthmen that they have shown him the errors of continuing existence.

Phantasy Star IV[]

Hugh and the other companions of Rolf appears in a vision that Chaz sees, while claiming Elsydeon.

Abilities[]

Hugh is not particularly strong as a fighter, but his techniques are very effective against biomonsters, making him a capable technique user. He is also similar in effect to Kain: both can use certain type of techniques that are effective against certain type of enemies, and both can use the same type of weapons.

Stats[]

Hugh Stats

Note: Character stats subject to random variation by approximately 50% at each level up. [2]

Hugh gains above average TP and luck, making him good at using techniques and avoiding enemy special attacks. However, his agility and defense are almost as low as Amy's, making him slow and unable to take physical attacks well.

If the player were the make him more valuable later on in the game, they would have to continue to improve him during the fighting mode.
