Layan feather

The feather-like symbol representing people of Layan heritage.

Layans are a subrace of humans that appear in Phantasy Star III: Generations of Doom. People descending from this bloodline are followers or distant relatives of the legendary heroine, Laya.

According to Ozaki, the character designer for Phantasy Star III, the Layan symbol is meant to resemble a bird's feather. The feather itself "evoke[s] a mysterious image of her as a woman who descended from heaven."[1]

Layan people typically wear long flowing robes reminiscent of espers from classic titles in the Phantasy Star saga. Women of Layan royalty in particular, such as Maia or Laya's sister, are usually seen wearing a bindi on their forehead, perhaps as an homage to Laya.

People of Layan heritage are born with an affinity for techniques. Their preference toward magic makes Layans excellent spell casters in the field of battle. Additionally, certain Layans are capable of controlling monstrous creatures to do their bidding, or even use a spell to become a creature themself, as was the case with Lyle.
