Phantasy Star Eternal Hunters was an online social game hosted by Yahoo Mobage Town. Although it was designed for phones, it was also playable on a computer from Mobage Town's website. In order to play, one had to create a yahoo.jp ID in order to access the website, however, the game's servers are currently closed. Phantasy Star Eternal Hunters had a sequel that released on November 21, 2011 called Phantasy Star Eternal Planets.
Eternal Hunters is described as a "local interlocking RPG," with the game accessing GPS information from the player's phone. The information is then used to determine the random encounters found in the overworld as the game is played. The interface is a simple menu-based system that allows the player to customize their character and prepare for the battles ahead.
Combat in Eternal Hunters is, much like the navigation, menu-based. As the player travels across the map, they are able to collect various materials and rewards. On certain occasions, an enemy will appear on one of the tiles which commences battle. The player is given the option of either using an item or choosing a character to attack the desired target. Once the enemy is defeated, the player will be rewarded with certain prizes.
During certain periods, Sega hosted special events that encouraged players to travel across Japan and visit certain cities. By participating in these events, players were able to fight special encounters and even receive a special item, the Eternal Hunters Sword, in the form of a product code that was redeemable on the Playstation Network for Phantasy Star Portable 2: Infinity.
